Best Mobile Plans in Korea for Foreigners: Start With Your Residency Status

The right Korean phone plan depends first on whether you have a residence card, how long you will stay and whether you need a number tied to local identity services.

A Korean phone number is more than a way to receive calls. Over time it becomes connected to deliveries, reservations, bank authentication and the small digital doors that make everyday life easier.

Short stay: prepaid keeps the beginning simple

Major carriers offer prepaid options for foreign visitors and residents. SK Telecom states that prepaid service can be opened with an unexpired passport, while KT advertises foreigner prepaid plans that can also be joined with a passport. These products change, so use current carrier pages rather than an old comparison chart.

Longer stay: residence identification opens more options

For postpaid service, carriers commonly ask for a Korean residence card or equivalent identification. SK Telecom publishes a detailed document list, and foreign-resident plans are available for certain visa groups. KT and LG U+ also market plans specifically to foreign customers.

Do not compare only gigabytes

  • Is the plan prepaid or postpaid?
  • Does it support local identity verification?
  • What speed applies after the high-speed allowance?
  • Is international calling useful to you?
  • Is the customer center accessible in your language?
